Echolalia The Autism Chronicles Book 2 edition by Lynn Messing Literature Fiction eBooks

What do a superhero, a pumpkin, and light switches have in common? They are all special interests of Jerome's brother Todd. Todd's autism is so severe that his speech is limited to echolalia -- the repetition of other people's words.
Jerome's dearest wish is to have a real conversation with his younger brother. Will Todd's echolalia be the first step in making his wish come true?
Echolalia The Autism Chronicles Book 2 edition by Lynn Messing Literature Fiction eBooks
Echolalia is the story of how a family is affected by the fact that one of its members, Todd, has autism. Told from the point of view of Todd's older brother Jerome, this story takes the form of a written assignment that Jerome creates for class. In it, he tells about life with Todd, about its difficulties and triumphs and about his special role as Todd's older brother.Messing does an elegant job of integrating information about autism without overburdening the reader. And since the story is told from Jerome's viewpoint, the story is written at a very human rather than clinical level. But make no mistake: Messing is well-informed about autism and her expertise is woven through the story. She treats Todd's character with respect while still being honest about autism.
This is much more than just a story about an autistic boy, though. It's the story of the relationship between two brothers and their relationships with their parents. The characters are real, the story is absorbing and it's written in an engaging way. Readers who live with autism will nod their heads in understanding and will identify with the characters. Readers who do not will learn in a very authentic way what life with an autistic family member is like. Highly recommended.
